The Somatic Starter-Dictionary

At times your therapist might ask you questions about where you are feeling your emotions in your body. This can be a helpful starting point for weaving together a story of what your body & mind are trying to tell you about your internal and external environments. Bringing awareness to your somatic experience includes a mindful shift in attention to bridge the connection between your mind and body. Then, naming the physical sensation to help translate your body’s communication efforts into a language that you understand.

Categories to consider when describing physical experiences:

1. Location-where in your body is this happening

2. Intensity-how much is there of the force/severity of the experience (low vs. high)

3. Quality-what something is, or its nature or characteristics (color/hue, sharp/dull)

4. Duration-the span of time it exists for
